Post #2- 1st week of filming (26th Sept - 2nd Oct 2011)
On Wednesday and the following weekend, Ashley and I went up to London to get more scene shots- we aimed for more sight seeing shots such as Big Ben, Houses of Parliamant, London eye, Westminster bridge Pal Mal and Buckingham Palace.
Sight seeing shots was only a small deal of purpose of going to London, we also managed to do various other shots in London that looked attractive enough, but less known, and we also made the impression that our singer was going through crowds on the pavement alongside sights using the camera as her eye view.
The weather was an issue as well; before getting the train to London, it was grey clouds everywhere spitting rain, but we decided to take the risk, and hoped the weather was going to get better, and so we went to London- we were both glad we took the risk as the weather didn't get any worse. We managed to use Pan, hand held, still motion, tracking and low/high angled shots in this scenery to give off the correct effect.

Post #1- 1st week of filming (26th Sept - 2nd Oct 2011)
On Monday, Ashley and I went up to the Lavender fields near Oaks park. We were hoping for a blossom of lavender throughout the field with the sun and blue skies, but that wasn't the case; it was more of a dull looking purple lavender with the sun struggling to get through the grey clouds, but still good enough to film. The point of us going to the Lavender fields was to shoot one of the many scenes we are going to use, so we can introduce it at different angles and sights in the Lavdender fields into our music video, so the viewer can expect what scene is coming up next.
Though the colour of the lavender was a disappointment, we did still manage to find a patch of lavender that was beaming with a better colour of purple, so we managed to film at that patch as well. Eventually, the sun came out and considering the title of the song we are using for our music video is "The sun is up", we tried to get scenes of pan shots with the lavander field and the sun- it was a success. We also used tracking, still motion, low angle, zoom out/in and hand held as well as pan shots; all of which were good shots.

Location list

2) Lavender fields near Oaks park. PROS: Beautiful scenery, a big field of lavender to film in, easy to get there. CONS: Can be quite risky getting into the Lavender fields as most of the time it is closed, and it is considered trespassing. HAZARDS: If it isn't open when we need to use it, we'd have to climb over barbed wire, which could give us all serious injuries, and it's open/clear land, so risking our possessions could prove bad.

HAZARDS: London streets can be quite dangerous, as a lot of crime is dealt with within London, and as we're carrying expensive equipment with us, we will have to be extra careful whilst filming.
We have chosen various locations and not just one as many music videos have at least two locations in them. When appropriate with the lyrics, depending on what part it is into the lyrics, we will change to whatever locations most suits that part to make our music video successful. I believe each location will represent a mood for the viewer.
Construction of the mise-en-scene in the music video
The purpose of the mise-en-scene is to set a mood/feeling, so that the viewer can relate to whatever is happening in certain clips- this is exactly what we will be trying to achieve in our music videos.
For example; we have now planned how our music video is going to be made, and certain clips will set the mood, such as when our singer is at the lavender fields, it will come across as a relexed mood, very calm and peaceful- this is what we aim to achieve with each of our selected locations but of course with different mood settings. The lavender fields will consist of:

- Purple lines of lavdender
- Sunset
- Elegant clothing on our singer
- A wooden frame in the middle of the lavender fields where you can sit
The list just consists of what people expect to see at any lavender fields, giving the vibe that this is an actual field of lavender.

Representation of people/groups in my video
Our aim is to represent our target audience, so that they are easily attracted to our representative footage of them. To represent our audience which are 16-20 both male and female, we look at some ideologies of the majority of late teenagers:
- "Relaxation" - 2 out of the 3 of our locations come across as very relaxing, and this is why we chose those locations; to give the relaxation vibe.
- "Sex" - Being a teenager is when you start to get interested in sex, so we add in love and search between a man and our female singer.
- "Idolising" - Normally women would idolize a singer/celebrity because of their tone, beauty and fashion; so our singer will have great tone, beauty and fashion sense so that our female audience can look up to her.
Just looking back at simple ideologies of teenagers, we have managed to plan out what stereotypes we're going to add into our music video to successfully engage our target audience.

List of Props
1) Actress - vital, main attention in the music video
2) Extras - used for background scenes
3) Alcohol - Used for effect in our video, giving it the party vibe mode
4) Mini bar
5) DJ
These props used in the making of our music video will be the key to grabbing our target audience; these props will give off the vibe that our audience can relate to, they will also set the mood of the scene, giving our audience what they want to be satisfied.
Research into adverts for Digipaks
I am going to analyse two digipak advertisements, and explain why certain types of advertisement is used for different digipaks.
Traditional advertising:
Traditional ways of advertising such as billboards, magazines and newspaper are still very effective today, but a new generation of advertising is slowly taking over, but whilst people still view paper read advertisements, then this way is still effective.
http://www.mojo4music.com/blog/newsletter/
Thought more and more magainzes are shutting down, and deciding to just stay an online magazine, there are still some paper produced magazines such as "Mojo"- a magazine dedicated to music. This magazine advertises lots of music in ways that engages the reader, such as keeping it as articles- this makes the reader aware of whatever artist/band they're reading about (making them aware about their new album/single, and when it's out).
Simple articles about artists- in this case, Ellie Goulding is featured in a newsletter about a performance of hers; this is allowing readers to know when this performance is of hers, and her single- a simple, but hidden advertisement.
Electronic advertising:
A new, modern way of advertising that is extremely effective as a lot of people nowdays use TV/Internet as a source of entertainment. Simple and effective ways of electronic advertising for free would be Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube, and paid: advertisements on TV, advertised in magazines.
Putting your music on Youtube is a form of advertising so that people can hear what they soon buy. However, in my opinion, the best form of free advertising is Twitter- it's a popular social networking site alongside Facebook, you get to "follow" your idols (e.g. Lady Gaga) so you can keep up to date with their latest music, and gigs, and when your idol "tweets" (updates their status) every single fan of that artist/band knows what they just said:

Research into Digipaks
Digipaks were commonly used for CD and DVD, to make the packaging mainly inside presentable. Digipaks would normally consist of a paper based background (could have pictures) and a plastic covering on top of it so the CD/DVD can be put in it.
Since the invention of Digipaks, it has more of a use than to just protect the CD/DVD inside it- the majority of digipaks are now made with disigns inside of it as well as on the outside to relate to what is on the CD/DVD.
I will be analysing two digipaks; a simple designed one, and a more complex designed one.
A simple design:

I have used "Adele- 21" Digipak for a simple design example as there is no more than one CD inside the digipak. This digipak quite simple has a photo of the artist on the front cover, a list of the songs at the back with another photo of the artist at the back, shows the CD itself and finally photos of the processing of the songs in a little booklet. A simple design and effective for selling as it is clean, and not too complex.

For a more complex design example, I have used "The Simpsons season 11"- on the front cover we can see it's starting off simple with one of the Simpson's characters shown, then lists the episodes on the back that are on the DVDs. Getting more complex, I open the outer case to reveal another designed packaging, and when it's opened we see lots of design work, and behind each slotted design is a DVD with it small booklet too. In this particular season there are 4 DVDs that consist of all the listed episodes shown on the back of the outer packaging.

Crew list
My Media A2 group consists of 3 friends and I. Working with my group should be easy enough as I am good friends with two of them, and it's always good to have someone new in your group, so you can get to know them more than you did before.
- Daniel Heighington (myself) - Filming and editing will be my job
- Ashley Groom - Filming and editing will be Ashley's job
- Rakulan Sivapalan - Rakulan will be used as an actor in the filming, and will also help alongside editing
- Syed Ali Shah - Syed will be helping with some of the theory work such as the digipaks.
Syed is the new addition of people I have worked with before, not knowing him much, this will be a great opportunity to work alongside him, and get to know him more.
Confident in my media group, I think we will succeed in the making of our music video, through good times and tough times.

Shooting schedule
First shooting- 19th Monday- Practice filming. - We have chosen to do this even though not necessary. Our singer will not be in our practice shots, we will be merely shooting the scenery (Lavender fields) and discussing what types of shots, and where on her body the camera will be looking at/from.
Second shooting- 21st Wednesday- filming at Lavender fields, Oaks Park. - Our first proper footage set date; we will be shooting various shots from different angles like the pan, attempt crane move, tracking, close, medium and long shots all on the tripod.
Third Shooting- 24th Saturday- filming in London streets. - Most shots will be tracking and pan techniques as our singer will be walking while filming, and we will be filming behind, side and front view of her, and of course some close, meduim and long shots of her walking through the streets.
Fourth shooting- 26th Monday- Lavender fields. - We will be returning back to the Lavender fields as it is our closest use of scenery, and we will have bound to come up with some more ideas of shots since our last visit to the Lavender fields.
Fifth shooting- 28th Wednesday- filming in London- Back to London, and we will be filming scenery shots, and maybe even some more shots of our singer if we've come up with more shooting ideas.
Sixth shooting- 1st Saturday- Brighton beach - We'll only have one chance to film here as it's quite a journey, and is a small fortune to get there. Most shots will be done on the shoreline of the beach; of her walking/laying down on the beach and use of panning, medium/close up shots will be used for this. We will also be filming underneath and on the pier.

List of equipment
1) Camera- taking the shots of footage
2) Tri-pods - steadying the camera's balance whilst filming
3) Lighting - to create a better effect/mood in the footage
4) CD player - to be played whilst recording footage, so that our singer can sing along to the lyrics
5) Lyrics on paper - especially for the singer, to learn the lyrics off by heart.
The equipment listed is what we'll use throughout the making of the whole music video, and are the most vital.

Conventions for music videos
The convention meaning is something along the lines of what is to be expected, or what is acceptable. The conventions we will be using in our music videos is what is used in many modern music videos today, such as:
- Edited effects
- Different shots taken at different angles
- Stereotypes
- Sex appeal
- Airbrushed
- Different scenes
Many music videos nowadays have the above points in them, but the music video "Alexandra Stan - Mr Saxobeat" clearly shows all of them:
The song we're using to make our music video "Inna- The sun is up" is mainly pop based, and I expect the following conventions from a Pop genre music video:
- Highly edited (edited shots, and put in effects)
- More than just one person shown throughout the music video
- Happy song/video
- Story/concept music video
"Beyoncé - Run the world (Girls) clearly shows the above points:
- Edited effects
- Different shots taken at different angles
- Stereotypes

Research into the music industry
How are music videos made?
Hours of camera footage is taken, yet less than 5 minutes of it will be used for the final music video. All the footage is put onto computer, to edit all the footage that is going to be used for the final video- but while footage is still being taken, normally the artist would lip sync their music so the recorded voice of theirs' can be edited into the music video. Yet you see music videos lasting 3-4 minutes, it can take months for the footage to be taken, places to be hired to shoot, the choreography to be rehearsed.... 3-4 minutes of work can take longer than it seems.
Main companies which show music videos:
- Youtube
- Vevo
- MTV
These are only few of big music producing companies in the world. Even though Youtube was a video sharing company first, but had talks about showing music videos.
Where can you find music videos?
The main sources of finding music videos are Youtube and Vevo, both video sharing sites, though Vevo is more dedicated to show just music videos by nation known artists. If you have a Youtube account yourself, you can "subscibe" to the artist you're listening/watching in a music video to keep up to date on what they're putting on Youtube.
What are the purpose of music videos?
On a business sides' view, making a profit when producing a music video is key and it all comes down to the artists's personality, and whether the audience like them. Probably one of the most successful artists of the last decade was Lady Gaga- she came into the music industry showing who she really is, and I wouldn't say it was her music that made her extremely famous and successful; she showed in life, and in her music videos just how wacky her outfits really are, and the target audience liked the new style to music.

Intertextuality in music videos
Intertextuality within music videos is quite common nowadays, they're mainly used so that new music videos can grasp onto the same audience as the music video that was used for intertextuality.
I have chosen the music video "Emeli Sandé- Heaven" as I feel it has used a very familar concept that "Massive Attack- Unifinished Sympathy" had.
The main ideas I thought Emeli Sandé had used from Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy was the background of the homeless, elderly, and urban city- I think Emeli wanted a 90s vibe to go with her music video, to grab the same audience Massive Attack had. Emeli also had a filter that gave off the effect that the camera that was being used to shoot her footage wasn't modern; she did this purposely only to give more of a 90s look.
Each of the lyrics from both of the songs I have been comparing do not link, only the footage does. From what I see, Emeli hasn't used any lyric intertexuality, only footage- and a lot of it. One obvious concept that Emeli has used from Unfinished Sympathy's music video is that both of the women singing in each of the music videos are singing in the street- yet Emeli isn't seen to be walking as well as singing in the street, she managed to gather a similar concept.

Categories of music videos: Concept based
Concept based music videos normally have no relation between the footage and the lyrics, and as where there is little or no lip syncing at all.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9AFMVMl9qE
"Ellie Goulding- Your Song" is a perfect example for a concept based music video as Ellie is featured throughout the music video, but the footage has no relation with the lyrics, nor is there any lip syncing in the footage- it's as if Ellie is looking back at memories of happy times, but singing a very random song, NO RELATION AT ALL!

Categories of music videos: Performance based
Performance based music videos is when the singer/band is sighted mnay times in the video, but they're just there to sing the song, in other words; the lyrics normally don't have anything to do with the video, only very slight relation to set a mood with their background footage.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=pARrzv_3I-o
I have chosen the song "Cover Drive- Lick ya down" as the band singing is featured throughout the music video, but doesn't tell any story relating to the lyrics or footage; they are simply there singing the song, and showing that this song is a happy, party song- so the only slight relation is the song, and the party themed background.

Categories of music videos: Narrative based
Narrative based music videos tend to have a storyline in the footage to follow on along with the lyrics- some viewers are able to relate with the artist singing whether it be a problem, or a happy time in life; which is why some viewers like watching these types of music videos...
www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwTMyjTNBM8
I have chosen the song: Adele- Chasing pavements as it shows two people, who have recently been in a car crash, not moving, but perform and form a story when Adele sings whilst lying down on the pavement- the car crash symbolises the "crash" in these two peoples' relationship that Adele is singing about. Adele's "Chasing pavements" song is about a woman and a man, showing the story quicky of how they met, and how it ended, and how, still today, that the woman regrets whatever she had done, and still tries to get back with the man.
I would say that considering this song is more soul, I am going to say Narrative based music videos fall into the genres: Soul and Pop.

Laura Mulvey's analysis of music videos
The "Gaze theory" and its pleasures:
Though Laura Mulvey is against the whole idea of portraying women as sexual objects on screen (in music videos/movies) it has made us all realise how we can use sex appeal in such a way to attract at least half of our audience; men.
Sex appeal, as we found out, is actually vital in our music video as the age of our audience is about the time they start taking an interest into sex- sex appeal will easily engage our heterosexual male side of the audience into watching the music video, and from past research, we have found out that our male audience WANTS to see sex appeal in music videos, and that is what we're going to give them.
Our singer will be a female, and to add sex appeal, she will be wearing revealing and "inapproprate" clothing to entise our male audience- our female extras in the background will be exactly the same.
Different angled shots of our star's body will be put into our music video, as if the camera was the heterosexual male's eyes, looking at the female body how they would want to.
Even though we agree that sex appeal used on women is degrading, and shouldn't be encouraged; in modern society it is used frequently, and we plan to use it to engage half of our audience.
This music video below is actually aimed at sex appeal, as both the footage and lyrics are about "Sex":

Andrew Goodwin's analysis of music videos
Music videos demonstarte genre characteristics:
We don't plan to put in any visible intruments in the music video, the closest to a routine we will have is our singer, dancing with the rest of the background, but she will be stood out to be known as the attraction for this music video.
There is a relationship between the lyrics and footage:
We don't plan to make our music video into the narrative/story- telling idea- we plan to make it into a concept music video, where the lyrics and footage don't relate. HOWEVER, we will be putting in slight relation- for example: When the lyrics "The sun is up" is said, the sun will appear, when the lyrics "All the people tonight put your hands in the air" is said, everyone in the scene will be putting their hands in the air- our relationship between the lyrics and the footage will only go as far as that.
Lady Gaga's use of lyrics and footage relating went quite well, as you will see in her music video "Born this way":
Close- ups of the artist:
To ensure our target audience know the main singer in our music video, there will be plenty different angled, close ups/zoom outs of our star, so that maybe even one of those shots can be put on the front of our own made digipak.
In Ellie Goulding's cover of "Your song" music video, we see a lot of shots of her, and plenty of close ups of her too:
Intertextual reference:
Like many other modern music videos today, we too will be using intertexuality to form a successfull music video- we have used Rhianna's "Only girl" music video to gain a main scene for our music video, though we have not exactly copied Rhianna's concept, we have used a lot of ideas from her music video to form our own scenes.

Audience Identification
Our music video is using the song: "Inna- The sun is up" which has a lot of sexual revelance to it as Inna (the singer), a very good looking woman, esposes a lot of flesh in her music video, and I believe it is aimed at both male and female, ages 16-20 (The age of where sex is interesting). Males aged 16-20 would be watching this type of music video as it has a good looking woman, the star of the music video in it (The heterosexual man being drawn to this)- Inna is purposely using sex appeal to gain more of a wider audience. Females aged 16-20 would be watching this type of music video as Inna would be looked up to by them as a role model for her slim tone, good looks, and fashion sense. Or an idol for her music.
I would have to say the social grouping for the song we're going to be using is C2 on the demographic scale and downwards- because the majority of its audience would still be in school, full time education or have recently started basic work in life.
The targeted audience we have already identified will also like other modern music, idols such as Lady Gaga to look up to. The uses and Gratifications theory shows that people would view our music video for a number of reasons- Entertainment is the main reason, it gives the viewer pleasure, whether that be sexual arousal for sexual pleasure, escapism (escaping from life's problems) or even relaxation; all of the audience wanting to view our music video will be doing so based on entertainment purpose.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs explain that entertainment in our lives is a need by everyone once staging through the basic needs in life, more complex needs are discovered. Music videos are entertainment for us all, and if a music video is good quality (both music and footage), the need of certain people is satisfied.
